Greetings from 1691
Limerick spends this week, as the sporting capital of Europe, and that's no joke. Two international championships land at once, and the city around them keeps its own pace going.
The OCR World Championships bring obstacle racers from around the world to Limerick Racecourse from Thursday. At the same time the European Sport for All Games open at King John's Castle on Friday and fill the city with 50 traditional sports through Monday.
The All Ireland Skateboarding Championship returns to Mount Kennett. Treaty United's women host Cork City in a Munster derby at the Markets Field. Dolans has a tribute double-bill, and Nicholas Street closes to cars for free Sunday jazz outside Treaty City Brewery.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
OCR World Championships 2026
Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 August · Limerick Racecourse
A world championships, in Patrickswell, this weekend. The best obstacle course racers on the planet contest 100m and 400m sprints, short and standard courses, team relays and junior events over four days, and spectators are actively wanted rather than tolerated. Watching elite athletes throw themselves over walls all afternoon is better live sport than it has any right to be. Well worth the short spin out.
European Sport for All Games
Friday 7 to Monday 10 August · King John's Castle, city centre and campuses
Almost 50 traditional sports and games from across Europe, and the whole point is that you have a go: tchoukball, traditional wrestling, target games, GAA and plenty you've never heard of, free to try at venues across the city from 11am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. The opening ceremony is at King John's Castle on Friday evening, community sports days run at Mary Immaculate on Friday and UL on Monday, and it all closes with a party at the Milk Market on Monday night. Limerick won hosting rights over cities twice its size; show up and justify it.
The Chop Sueys and Hard Bizkit
Friday 7 August · 20:00 · Dolans Warehouse
A full nu-metal night, billed as the Ultimate Nu-Metal Showdown: Korn and Deftones from The Chop Sueys, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park from Hard Bizkit. Nostalgia this specific either means nothing to you or is exactly what your Friday needed, and you already know which. Wear the old band t-shirt.
Favourite Worst Nightmare: Arctic Monkeys Tribute
Saturday 8 August · 20:00 · Dolans Warehouse
Ireland's best Arctic Monkeys tribute covers the whole run from the Sheffield demos to The Car, in the venue that suits that catalogue better than any arena would. Standing only, strictly over 18s with ID, and it runs to 11:30 so nobody goes home short-changed. The Warehouse on a Saturday for this one will be sweaty in the correct way.
Sunday Jazz Sessions
Sunday 9 August · 15:00 to 19:00 · Nicholas Street
Treaty City Brewery's Sunday jazz moves outdoors for August, taking advantage of Nicholas Street going car-free every weekend this month. Four hours of free live jazz on the city's medieval street, with the brewery taps a few steps away, as part of the One Fómhar D'Road Festival. The best free afternoon in Limerick right now, and it's not close.
Dance Limerick Summer Moves
Sunday 9 August · 11:00 to 15:00 · John's Square
Outdoor dance performances filling John's Square for four hours as part of Summer in the City, free and open to whoever wanders past. Dance outdoors reaches people who'd never buy a theatre ticket, which is precisely the point of it. Bring the kids; they'll be joining in by the second hour.
All Ireland Skateboarding Championship
Saturday 8 August · 12:00 · Mount Kennett Skate Park
The national championships have run at Mount Kennett since 2010, and the divisions tell you what the scene has become: under 12s, a women's and LGBTQ+ category, teens, adults and a 30-plus mixed class. Ireland's best skaters in one park for an afternoon, and watching from the rail costs nothing. Go for twenty minutes, stay for two hours.
Treaty United Women v Cork City
Saturday 8 August · 15:00 · Markets Field
A Munster derby in the Women's Premier Division, and the kind of fixture that decides how a season is remembered. The Markets Field on a Saturday afternoon is family-friendly, cheap and loud in all the right moments. If you've not seen the women's league live yet, a derby is the correct introduction.
